Mrs. Dennie Jones

Welcome to Transitional Kindergarten at Laurelglen School.  Your child is joining me as we continue to develop a new grade level for California.  In the last few years  California has been changing the things that kindergarteners are expected to learn and kindergarten is now more academic than ever.  As this change began we, who taught kindergarten, found that the youngest members of our classes were struggling with the pace and depth of our materials because they just hadn't matured enough to keep up. In order to meet these students' needs the state decided to add a new grade level and now we have Transitional Kindergarten.  This grade looks more like what kindergarten was when we were students.  It's all about the experience of being at school for the first time.  We spend a lot of time learning how to go to school, how to treat others with respect, working on strengthening our fingers so we can write and draw, and learning our ABCs and 123s.

As for me, I have been teaching for 35 years mostly in Kindergarten though I have taught first and second grade.  I have been at Laurelglen for 25 years and have taught 28 in our Kindergarten. After teaching one year in Transitional Kindergarten I have found that most important key to success is forming good relationships with my students and their parents.  I also strive to create happy relationships between my students while teaching them that we are all different but we all have feelings and want to be accepted. Following the relationship key we work on the academics of our grade and all the while trying to make it FUN.  I want my students to find that learning and discovering can be fun so we do a lot of messy things because that's what four and five year olds are all about. So if you're ready let's get started!
