Principal's Message

  • Pope Welcome to Fred L. Thompson Junior High (A National AVID Demonstration School). The home of the Timberwolves, like its namesake, is proud of its rich traditions, strong academics, music awards, athletic accomplishments, as well as a safe and healthy environment. Thompson was established in 1967, and is the oldest junior high in the Panama Buena Vista Union School District which is located in southwest Bakersfield.

For the most part, our students come from homes of working class families with a strong work ethic and sense of fair play. Thompson students come together in a harmonious, respectful atmosphere where families and community applaud the opportunity and recognition their students receive.

The Thompson Junior High School Staff is committed as a group of individuals working interdependently to achieve a common goal for which they are held mutually accountable as a worthy means of ensuring high levels of learning for all students.  Each child has access to a comprehensive instructional program consisting of reading, English, history, math, science, physical education, and an elective. Eighth graders also receive a semester of computer science.  Committed to the Professional Learning Community philosophy, our teachers continuously exercise an intense scrutiny of the curriculum, standards, and framework in order to identify essential standards and focus on student learning. Numerous middle school adjustments have been made to align the curriculum and student support services to promote middle school best practices.  To this end, Thompson staff, parents, the Board of Trustees, District administration, and the broader community work collaboratively and cooperatively for the benefit of each student.

As promoted below in our Mission Statement, Thompson strives to become a bridge whereby our students can successfully compete in a world of technology, yet retain their strong sense of connection and respect for each other.  Please take the time to view our entire website and add it to your “favorites” list as a reference.
